Grand Opening for New Affordable Housing Community in Ahoskie

Ahoskie, NC: A grand opening ceremony for “Cypress Court”, a new 48-unit apartment community dedicated to serving low and moderate income residents, took place at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 18th at Cypress Court Apartments located at 100 Cypress Court in Ahoskie. The apartments are located at the eastern extension of Everett Street, immediately behind New Market Shopping Center and Piggly Wiggly. The property was developed by the Affordable Housing Group of North Carolina, Inc. of Charlotte, which hosted the ceremony. Tours of new units were available following the ceremony.

Cypress Court opened its doors in June 2016 and is anticipated to be fully occupied by the end of August 2016. The Apartments are professionally managed by Excel Property Management, and serve households with maximum incomes of sixty percent (60%) or less of the area median income of Hertford County, adjusted for household size. For a four person household this would equate to an income at or below $31,980. Rents range from $374 to $580.   The Cypress Court community includes a mix of 4 one-bedroom, 28 two-bedroom, and 16 three-bedroom attractive garden apartment units. Six units were designed to accommodate residents with disabilities.

Cypress Court incorporates green and energy efficiency measures that have been verified by an independent, third party expert. The apartment homes’ feature efficient windows, Energy Star certified appliances, and water saving toilets and showers.  Residents will have access to a community building that includes a property management office, full kitchen, sitting/meeting area, computer/library room, laundry room, fitness room and screened porch. Outdoor amenities include a playground and a picnic shelter with tables and grill. Cypress Court’s green features, along with its high quality of design and construction, result in attractive apartment homes that reduce the community’s environmental impact and enhance residents’ quality of life. The property’s location is convenient to grocery, shopping, and dining options, along with numerous employers within walking distance.

Cypress Court represents a $6.5 million investment in Hertford County, particularly in Ahoskie. The North Carolina Housing Finance Agency (NCHFA), the Community Affordable Housing Equity Corporation (CAHEC), Community Investment Corporation of the Carolinas (CICCAR), and BB&T assisted by providing financing for the project. Federal and state tax credits awarded by NCHFA were essential to the development of the property. “The financial support of these organizations has enabled us to provide new housing for families in Ahoskie so they can live in a healthy and thriving community,” said Kathy Stilwell, Executive Director of The Affordable Housing Group of NC, Inc. She continued, “All across North Carolina families struggle to find housing that is affordable. We are proud that Cypress Court will provide a new, high quality, affordable option to families in Hertford County today and for many years to come.”

Ms. Stilwell added, “This project also owes significant gratitude for the support provided by our community partner Choanoke Area Development Association (CADA) and The Town of Ahoskie as we work together to enhance the community and improve lives.”
